Yankees Rumors: NY Expects to Make Trade

As always, the Yankees are looking to makes trades before the July 31st deadline. Even the casual baseball fan wouldn’t be shocked by this. David Lennon of Newsday.com reported on June 18th that Yankees general manager Brian Cashman expects to make a trade in the next few weeks. Cashman said, " We usually make moves every year, so I expect to make moves again."

To stay competitive, Joe Girardi has the luxury of an open wallet. The Yankees business model has been to buy what they need when they need it, yet injuries have plagued their club over the last two seasons. Don’t get me wrong, the Yankees skipper has done a great job working within those parameters and finding ways to win with the players provided. It hasn’t just been a plug-and-play formula.

Currently, the Yankees are 38-33 and one and 1/2 games out of first place in the mediocre AL East. With a payroll hovering around $197 million you can wonder why Girardi is scratching his head. This is not what was expected in 2014, considering the club has spent in excess of $450 million on free agents. If the Yankees would like to rebuild their farm system, Cashman and company cannot be impatient as the trade deadline approaches.

"Everybody's making their phone calls," Cashman said. "There are some big players that are available, but the price tags are going to be extremely high. There might be smaller pieces that can pay big dividends for teams."

I don’t want to speculate on the rumors circulating throughout MLB regarding deals for Chase Headley,Jeff SamardzijaChase Utley, and Jason Hammel to name a few, but the Yankees will definitely be in the mix. Let's just hope they don't mortgage the farm in the process.
